Home / Knowledge base / Extending the Shelf Life of Hot Melt Adhesives: Best Practices
To maximize the shelf life of hot melt adhesives, proper handling and storage are crucial.
Begin by storing adhesives in a climate-controlled environment, ideally between 10°C to 25°C.
Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold, as fluctuations in temperature can cause the adhesive to degrade or harden prematurely.
Seal adhesive containers tightly after each use to prevent air and moisture from entering.
Exposure to moisture can cause the adhesive to become clumpy or lose its bonding strength.
If working with bulk adhesives, consider using airtight, moisture-proof containers to extend shelf life.
Rotate stock regularly, using older adhesive supplies before newer ones to ensure that the adhesive doesn’t exceed its recommended shelf life. If the adhesive has thickened or shows signs of degradation, it’s important to check its consistency before use. You can sometimes rejuvenate slightly thickened adhesives by gently reheating them, but always ensure the product is still effective and safe to use.
Lastly, always store adhesives in their original packaging. This helps maintain the integrity of the product and prevents contamination from foreign materials.
