Shoes & Assembly adhesives
Footwear and leather goods, product assembly, mattress and foam bonding.
What this line needs from a hot melt
Foam, felt, nonwoven and leather all share one problem: they are easy to damage with heat and hard to bond without soaking the adhesive into the substrate. The answer is usually a sprayable grade at a controlled temperature rather than a heavier bead.
We supply pocket spring assembly, foam bonding for mattresses and furniture, footwear and leather goods, and general product assembly grades.
Tell us this much
The more of this you can give us, the more useful our first reply will be.
- Substrates on both sides and their porosity
- Spray, bead or dot application
- Open time needed to position the part
- Service temperature and any solvent or fuel contact
- Line speed or parts per hour
If this is happening on your line
The faults we are called out to most often in shoes & assembly, what actually causes them, and the grade we would put on the line.
Foam collapses or marks where the adhesive lands
Why it happens. Applied too hot, or too heavy a bead concentrating heat in one line.
What we would do. UPT-6218, a sprayable polyolefin that spreads a soft, wide pattern instead of a hot bead.
Pocket spring seams open on a fast line
Why it happens. The adhesive has not set by the time the next spring is indexed.
What we would do. UPT-3421D2 — quick setting, applies at 150°C, developed for pocket spring assembly.
Sole or upper bond fails in heat
Why it happens. Softening point below the temperature the product sees in storage or transport.
What we would do. Move up in softening point — tell us the storage and transit temperature the product sees and we will pick a grade that stays above it.
Nonwoven or felt soaks up the adhesive and the bond starves
Why it happens. Viscosity too low for a porous substrate.
What we would do. Tell us the substrate density and we will pick a viscosity that stays on the surface.
