Carton Sealing & Packaging adhesives
End-of-line case and carton closing, tray forming, tetra pack straw and cap fixing.
What this line needs from a hot melt
Carton sealing looks like the simplest hot melt application there is, which is exactly why it is where most money is quietly wasted. The bead is usually wider than it needs to be, the tank is usually hotter than it needs to be, and the grade is usually chosen on price per kilogram rather than cost per carton.
We supply end-of-line case and carton closing, tray forming, paper bag handle construction, wrap-around labelling and tetra pack straw and cap fixing.
Tell us this much
The more of this you can give us, the more useful our first reply will be.
- Substrate and any coating or varnish
- Line speed and compression time
- Open time you need for the pack to close
- Target cost per carton, not per kilogram
- Existing applicator make and tank size
If this is happening on your line
The faults we are called out to most often in carton sealing & packaging, what actually causes them, and the grade we would put on the line.
Stringing and cobwebbing between the nozzle and the carton
Why it happens. Viscosity too high for the temperature being run, or a worn nozzle.
What we would do. Match the grade to your actual set temperature rather than raising the temperature to suit the grade — UPT-3773 is formulated to run at 140–160°C.
Adhesive consumption higher than it should be
Why it happens. Bead wider than needed, or a high-density grade: you buy by weight but apply by volume.
What we would do. A lower-density grade gives more metres of bead per kilogram. Ask us to work out your cost per carton rather than comparing price per kilogram.
Metallised PET cartons will not hold
Why it happens. The metallised surface gives an EVA grade very little to key into.
What we would do. UPT-4753, a synthetic rubber grade developed for exactly this substrate.
Wrap-around labels lift at the lap seal on round bottles
Why it happens. The grade sets before the label has fully conformed to the curve.
What we would do. UPT-7662 — very low viscosity, semi pressure-sensitive, applies at 150°C.
