Book Binding adhesives
Spine and side glues for perfect binding lines, plus BOPP lamination coatings.
What this line needs from a hot melt
In perfect binding the adhesive is the spine. Page pull, lay-flat and the hinge are all decided by how far the spine glue penetrates the milled edge and how flexible it stays afterwards.
We supply spine and side glues for perfect binding lines, plus heat-seal coatings for BOPP document lamination.
Tell us this much
The more of this you can give us, the more useful our first reply will be.
- Paper type and gsm, and the cover stock
- Binder make and books per hour
- Spine milling and notching setup
- Whether you need spine glue, side glue or both
- Any lay-flat requirement
If this is happening on your line
The faults we are called out to most often in book binding, what actually causes them, and the grade we would put on the line.
Pages pull out of the spine
Why it happens. The spine glue is not penetrating the milled paper edge deeply enough.
What we would do. A lower viscosity spine glue — F-4103 at 1,500 cPs @ 150°C penetrates most paper types well.
The book will not open flat
Why it happens. The spine has set too rigid.
What we would do. UPT-1353, a general purpose spine glue that keeps the spine flexible while holding page pull.
The cover lifts at the hinge
Why it happens. Side glue open time too short for the cover to be positioned and pressed.
What we would do. UPT-1571 — high open time, high strength side glue.
Glue shows through a light-coloured cover
Why it happens. A pigmented or yellow-toned side glue under thin cover stock.
What we would do. F-5245, a water-white side glue with a low 70°C softening point for a smooth thin film.
